My TCM Breakfast Obsession: 𝙔𝙞 𝙔𝙞 𝙍𝙚𝙣 porridge 😋
𝙔𝙞 𝙔𝙞 𝙍𝙚𝙣 has many names: Croix Seed, Job's Tears, Chinese pearled barley, Yi Mi
It's an herb in Chinese Medicine that's used in many formulas to help to 𝙩𝙤𝙣𝙞𝙛𝙮 𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙙𝙞𝙜𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙚 𝙨𝙮𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙢 and 𝙧𝙚𝙙𝙪𝙘𝙚 𝙙𝙖𝙢𝙥𝙣𝙚𝙨𝙨 in the body. And it's gluten-free 👌🏽
I'll have to write another post on what '𝗱𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀' is, but think: congestion, mucous, cysts, pus, tumours. For additional symptoms, think: feeling lethargic, bloating, loose stools, sinus congestion, brain fog.
Many foods are used as herbs in TCM (food is medicine) and this is one of them.
You cook Yi Yi Ren like rice; I make mine in the insta pot.
Here's the recipe - along with the benefits!
🥣 1 cup Yi Yi Ren - 𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘨𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘯𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘥𝘪𝘨𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘴𝘺𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘮, 𝘥𝘳𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘴 𝘥𝘢𝘮𝘱𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴
🥣 10 Da Zao (Chinese red dates, pits removed. See my previous post about 𝘿𝙖 𝙕𝙖𝙤 to learn more!) - 𝘴𝘶𝘱𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘱𝘭𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘲𝘪, 𝘣𝘶𝘪𝘭𝘥𝘴 𝘣𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘥
🥣 Handful of walnuts - 𝘴𝘶𝘱𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘒𝘪𝘥𝘯𝘦𝘺 𝘴𝘺𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘮 & 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘣𝘳𝘢𝘪𝘯
🥣 2 tbsp chia seeds - 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘨𝘢 𝟹𝘴, 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘵𝘦𝘪𝘯, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘧𝘪𝘣𝘳𝘦
🥣 1 tbsp coconut oil - 𝘣𝘶𝘪𝘭𝘥𝘴 𝘺𝘪𝘯
🥣 3 cups vanilla almond milk (or 1/2 almond milk, 1/2 water)
🥣 A sprinkle of hemp hearts (optional) - which in TCM support 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘵𝘩𝘺 𝘱𝘰𝘰𝘱𝘴, but they are also a source of 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘵𝘩𝘺 𝘧𝘢𝘵𝘴, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘢𝘥𝘥 𝘢 𝘺𝘶𝘮𝘮𝘺 𝘯𝘶𝘵𝘵𝘺 𝘧𝘭𝘢𝘷𝘰𝘶𝘳.
🥣 Ground flax seeds - 𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘨𝘢𝘴 & 𝘯𝘶𝘵𝘵𝘺 𝘵𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘦
🥣 drizzle of almond milk
Put everything but the optional toppings in the insta pot (you could add the walnuts after but I find them easier to digest when cooked in - or a bit of both). Cook on pressure cook setting for 6min. Let sit 15min before opening the lid.
Freezes well for quick breakfasts too.

Da Zao - aka Jujube - aka Chinese Red Dates
Da Zao / Chinese Red Dates are used in TCM herbal medicine to nourish the blood, tonify the Spleen. It's often added to formulas to help harmonize the other herbs and protect the body from side effects.
If you've been diagnosed by a practitioner as having qi & blood deficiency, you can eat your medicine! And it tastes delicious!
This is a particularly good herb for bodies that go through monthly menstruation.
I've been enjoying Da Zao by adding it to oatmeal. Tips:
❗️The dates need to be cooked.
❗️Remove the pits before cooking.
→ Cook them with your steel-cut oats in the insta-pot or via stovetop.
→ If using flaked oats, simmer the dates in a bit of water first for 20min.
Da Zao is excellent for boosting fertility, softening the cervix before labour, supporting uterine muscles, and nourishing postpartum.
Chinese Dates are less sweet than the dates we usually get in the grocery store, so it's easier on the blood sugar. That being said, they're not recommended for everyone's constitution - so it's always wise to talk to your practitioner first.
You can order them @

So healthy it doesn’t have to be Thanksgiving to eat it. (And it also makes a great breakfast 😋)
My dad has a sweet tooth and I made this for my him when he was recovering from surgery. He didn’t even notice it’s:
𝗚𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗲𝗻-𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗲, 𝗦𝘂𝗴𝗮𝗿-𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗲, 𝗗𝗮𝗶𝗿𝘆-𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗲, 𝗘𝗴𝗴-𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗲, 𝗜𝗻𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁-𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗲! (jk on that last one, just seeing if you were paying attention 😉)
Instead, this recipe is:
𝘗𝘶𝘮𝘱𝘬𝘪𝘯-𝘧𝘶𝘭𝘭, 𝘧𝘭𝘢𝘷𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘧𝘶𝘭, 𝘫𝘰𝘺𝘧𝘶𝘭.
Ingredients & Directions for each:
🔸½ cup coconut flour
🔸½ cup almond flour
🔸¼ tsp sea salt
🔸1 dash of stevia (optional)
🔸3 flax eggs (or 2 large eggs) (3 tbsp flax seeds mixed with 6 tbsp water, let sit for 5-10 min until gelatinous)
🔸¼ cup coconut oil, slightly melted
1. Mix altogether, getting rid of any lumps.
2. In an 8 or 9 inch pie plate, press the dough evenly around the bottom & sides.
🔸1 + ½ cans of pumpkin puree (unsweetened)
🔸¼ cup maple syrup
🔸⅓ cup unsweetened plain almond milk

What is a Tiger Nut?
Contrary to the name, a tiger nut is tiger-free (phew!) and also nut-free (weird! But true!)
It is a root vegetable, a small tuber that tastes sweet and is packed with nutrients & fiber. 👊🏽
In one bowl, mix the following ingredients:
· 2 cups tigernut flour
· 1 cup almond flour (or you could just use 3 cups tigernut flour to make it nut free)
· 6 tbsp ground flax
· 2 tsp cinnamon
· 1/2 tsp salt
In a separate bowl, mix together:
· 2/3 mashed banana
· 1 cup blueberries
· 1 cup water
· 2/3 cup nut or seed butter of choice. I used a blend of coconut butter, almond butter & tahini - leftovers of what we had around. (You could use sunflower butter as per nut-free original recipe)
Mix the dry & wet ingredients together.
Divide into muffin tins or silicone muffin cups.
Makes approx 16 muffins.
I baked these for 32 min.
Recipe adapted from the delicious & inspiring @bakeitpaleo 👌🏽

“𝗟𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗦𝘂𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿”. It’s a 𝘴𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘰𝘯 in Chinese Medicine commonly associated with the last 2 weeks of summer, but few people know that it was traditionally applied to the last 2 weeks of each season. It’s about 𝘥𝘪𝘨𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯, about 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙘𝙚𝙨𝙨𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙚𝙭𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚𝙨 before the next transition or phase. It benefits us to eat well, supporting our digestive organs - the ‘Spleen’ (pancreas) & Stomach.
Many are preparing for back to school in Sept, so I thought I’d share a recipe that’s great to have on hand if you need a quick breakfast or snack that the whole fam will enjoy - and is super healthy, too!
𝗠𝗼𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗚𝗹𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗠𝘂𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗻𝘀
🔸1/3 cup unsweetened cranberries
🔸1/3 cup pumpkin seeds (or sub: sunflower seeds, sesame seeds or coconut flakes - or some of each!)
🔸1 ¼ cup grated zucchini
🔸2 cups grated carrot
🔸4 tsp. grated ginger
🔸1 cup unsweetened shredded coconut
🔸¼ cup maple syrup or honey
🔸¼ cup unsweetened apple sauce
🔸3 eggs or sub 3 flax “eggs”
🔸2 tsp. vanilla extract
🔸½ cup coconut oil melted
🔸¼ cup unsweetened plain nut milk (eg almond or coconut)
🔸1 ½ cups almond flour
🔸½ cup g/f flour (I like oat flour, or chickpea flour for extra protein)
🔸2 tsp. Cinnamon
🔸1 tsp. baking powder
🔸¼ tsp. baking soda
🔸½ tsp. salt
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
2. Line muffin tin(s) with 15 paper liners (or use silicone muffin cups)
3. In a large bowl, combine flours, cinnamon, baking powder, baking soda, salt. Whisk to combine.
4. In a 2nd large bowl, combine zucchini, carrot, and ginger. Mix in the eggs, coconut oil, maple syrup, apple sauce, cranberries & seeds and vanilla. Mix just until combined.
5. Carefully mix 1/2 of dry ingredients into the wet. Then add nut milk and mix just until combined. Add remaining dry ingredients.
6. Divide the batter into the muffin cups.
7. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until knife inserted in the middle comes out clean. After removing from the oven, cool in muffin tin for 3-5 minutes. Then remove muffins from the tin and continue to cool on a cooling rack.

𝗛𝗮𝗽𝗽𝘆 𝗙𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘆! I want to share with you my 𝘴𝘶𝘮𝘮𝘦𝘳 𝘣𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘨𝘦 𝘰𝘣𝘴𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯...

Hibiscus is a cooling and refreshing tea, great for summer. (Note if you have low blood pressure, avoid or use hibiscus sparingly, as it can lower blood pressure.)
Rosemary is slightly warming, enough to keep it balanced and add a unique accent of flavour. It’s also great for circulation.
𝘐𝘯𝘨𝘳𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘴 & 𝘐𝘯𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘶𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴:
🌺 Gather some loose-leaf dried hibiscus and rosemary. (@theherbalclinic is a good place to grab some!)
🌺 Brew an extra strong batch of hibiscus & rosemary tea, at a ratio of 2:1 (2 parts hibiscus: 1 part Rosemary). I like to make almost 1 litre to have extra on hand.
Let the tea cool for an hour, then put in a glass jar in the fridge to chill for a few hours. You can store it in the fridge for a week or so.
🌺 When ready to drink, fill a mason jar with 1/3 tea mix and 2/3 soda water.
🍋 I like to add a squeeze of lemon juice to make it extra tart & refreshing.
And yes, in case you noticed: while it may not be the 100% TCM thing to do, even *I* will put a few ice-cubes in my drink in +40 degree weather! (albeit with room temperature bubbly 😉)
🍹 𝙆𝙞𝙘𝙠 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙛𝙚𝙚𝙩 𝙪𝙥 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙚𝙣𝙟𝙤𝙮!

One of the bright sides of the world unravelling has been that I’ve had more time at home to prepare meals for myself where I can spend extra time on the presentation - as I’ll be eating it at home, too! I often pack / carry both lunches & dinners with me on my work days. So this has brought some joy.
Having said this, I want to also recognize there are many people who are unable to provide afford food for themselves/their family at this time, and encourage if you have a few bucks to support one of our location food banks (I recently made a donation to @feedontario but there are others like The Stop or Daily Bread).
Here’s a plant-based bowl I made recently:
🌿 roasted broccoli in sesame oil & lemon
🌿 roasted sweet potatoes
🌿 org spinach
🌿 pumpkin seeds
🌿 black sesame seeds
🌿 smoky tahini dressing sauce of awesomeness** ⬇️
**@braggs Apple cider vinegar, @maisond’orphee dijon mustard, @parallel_brothers smoky sesame butter, nutritional yeast, black pepper, splash of lime
