I want to share a few thoughts on how. This year has thrown so much at all of us. And it keeps bringing in the question 𝘏𝘖𝘞:
❔How do we deal with this?
❔How will I live with this?
❔How do I get through this?
❔How can I accomplish this?
❔How do I heal from this?
I wrote a cue card message to myself (swipe ➡️) at the start of 2020, one of my new year's mantras still posted above my desk. Little did I know the extent to which I would turn to it.
And now today’s thoughts on 𝘩𝘰𝘸, for what it’s worth, in case it helps...

It's a lot to take in sometimes.
I hear you.

What lies ahead.. we don't know.
We never have.
But especially now...
When I can't see the way through
I look within ↓
And I look up ↑
Guidance from both directions.
is the how.
The way = the how.
And the how is the heart.
The how = the heart.
And the breath
That links one moment to the next.
How we move
How we breath
into the unknown.
How we show up
For each other.
How we care
How we love
So we don't feel alone.
When we know so little else
This is the how
This is way.
Take care of your heart.
Take care of each other’s.

Our lives are multifaceted, and often emotions get put in a separate category, like a box we shove away that we don't have time - or make time - to sort through. But 𝙚𝙢𝙤𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙞𝙣𝙫𝙤𝙡𝙪𝙣𝙩𝙖𝙧𝙮. And each one creates 𝙖 𝙣𝙚𝙪𝙧𝙤𝙘𝙝𝙚𝙢𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙡 𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙥𝙤𝙣𝙨𝙚 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙗𝙤𝙙𝙮. They are a driving force in all of us, an essential part of human life, and a factor in disease.
But what do we do with them? 𝘏𝘰𝘸 do we work with them? If it sounds exhausting to tend to every emotion you have, I feel ya. We can't always do this, especially in a situation where the appropriate action calls for setting our emotions aside and dealing with them later.
And therein lies key - dealing with them later. 🗝
What Emily & Amelia's book 𝘉𝘶𝘳𝘯𝘰𝘶𝘵 is presenting, is actually good news: We don't always have to change the issue that sparked the emotion. We just have to deal with the feeling (or physical reaction) from it.
And here are some ways to do so:
▫️Positive social interaction (I know, a more challenging one in a pandemic!)
▫️Affection (i.e. a 20 second hug)
▫️A big cry
And though it wasn't mentioned, I'd like to propose 𝗮𝗰𝘂𝗽𝘂𝗻𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 for this list as well📍
One thing I love about Chinese Medicine is that emotions are woven into it. They are a recognized 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗶𝗻 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲. There are acupuncture points that help the body process the neurochemical responses of emotion, so we don't get stuck there - or burnt out.
𝘼𝙣𝙮 𝙢𝙤𝙧𝙚 𝙮𝙤𝙪'𝙙 𝙡𝙞𝙠𝙚 𝙩𝙤 𝙖𝙙𝙙 𝙩𝙤 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙡𝙞𝙨𝙩?

This is the wisdom of the 𝗙𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗘𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗻𝗼𝘅 - which arrives tomorrow.
Letting go can be hard. Or beautiful.
Letting go can be about moving towards 𝘳𝘦𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 - a benefic quality of the 𝘔𝘦𝘵𝘢𝘭 𝘦𝘭𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 and the Fall season, according to Chinese medicine.
𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙘𝙖𝙣 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙡𝙚𝙩 𝙜𝙤 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙀𝙦𝙪𝙞𝙣𝙤𝙭?
It could be material things, Marie Kondo style.
...with the astro transits* over this Equinox, what may become apparent are 𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘭-𝘦𝘮𝘰𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘱𝘢𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘯𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘤𝘭𝘶𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘭𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘴. Not just fear, anxiety or melancholy - but rumination therein. Incessant mental chatter. Like spam in our mental 'inbox'!
Not only does this mental clutter prevent us from feeling our best, but in Chinese medicine this rumination, or over-worrying, can damage the Spleen qi and create digestive issues such as bloating and lethargy.
On an external level, our negative self-talk or incessant worries will ultimately impact our behaviour. And with the placement of the planet Mars this month as well, we must be extra mindful in our words & actions.
So: My Equinox challenge to you (I will do it too, of course!) this week:
🍁Witness your mental emotional state with gentleness, self-compassion, and grace.
🍁If similar thoughts, fears, anxieties repeat themselves, write them down. Thank them. And let them go.
🍁If you want to get a little extra woo, write them on a fallen leaf. If there are more than one, collect several leaves and write on each. Then return them to the earth.
Intentions need to be backed up by actions; that's integration ✅ 👍🏽
Another way to integrate is acupuncture. See your acupuncturist (I happen to know one 😉) and say your intentions aloud, and allow the session to work with you. There are some badass acupoints for helping to set these intentions in motion, embodying your journey.

My choice of acupuncture point for the new moon in Virgo 👌🏽
Virgo is all about MIND/BODY connection, and the autonomic nervous system.
The word that comes up for me with a new moon in Virgo is “𝘈𝘭𝘪𝘨𝘯𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵”.
What is aligned with our authentic self, and what isn’t? Virgo gets picky, sorting through details and reorganizing us - for good reason. We are prepping for fall, for letting go of excess in order to feel balanced during Libra season.
I’ve definitely been feeling this Virgo season, where “getting my ducks in a row” has been the primary theme! Decluttering at home, organizing some behind the scenes biz, taking charge of my health, and planning some fall studies… ! 🦆 🦆 🦆 !
BUT without 𝙜𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙙𝙚𝙙 insight, the Virgo energy can have us caught in a head-spin. If we’re unable to connect our mind, body, emotions, spirit, we can get lost in the details - and end up frazzled 2 weeks in. If uncentered, this can wreak havoc on our psyche... and ultimately our body.
So take stock this new moon: am I organizing my life in a manner - and a pace - that’s aligned with who I am?
If you can get clarity on this, you can really harness this new moon in Virgo. Why? Because 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗺𝗼𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝗦𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗻, which can set the stage for sustainability through the actions we make today. 🙌🏽 💯
With the new moon trining Saturn, it’s a good day to set systems in place that help us build our future. But our intentions need to be clear, and aligned.

Why it’s good for hot summer days 🥵:
In Eastern Herbal Medicine this herb is used to 'drain 𝘥𝘢𝘮𝘱𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴’ (aka an antimicrobial diuretic for the 𝗱𝗶𝗴𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺), and is also cooling (anti-inflammatory) for the 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘁. The heat & humidity this month can increase bloating and digestive issues, as well as anxiety. Lemon balm can help keep our heart from over-heating and support digestion at the same time. ✌🏽💗

Through messages from my body this weekend, I was told to 𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳. My impatience was made to bow down to the higher forces that told me to eat my own advice 🤣 𝗦𝗲𝗹𝗳 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲. Not always easy. I am a natural do-er, with a tendency towards people pleasing (working on it!). There were things I was excited to do, appointments to be had, patients to see...
Once I let go of trying to force things, to hold things in place, 2020 gave me the lesson (again 🙃) of not being afraid to let things fall, to pause, and to pick things up again later. In the meantime, I was asked to reflect on…
2020 has shaken my vision. Perhaps yours, too. But life isn’t supposed to always go to according to plan. Though the path ahead still isn’t clear to me, that's ok. What became clear to me this weekend was a reminder of what I do have: 𝘭𝘰𝘷𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘯𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯. Without leaving my house, I had phone calls and laughs and cries with people I love, and was able to appreciate 𝘴𝘪𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘦 𝘱𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘦𝘴.
Staying reminded of that, some of the rest doesn’t matter as much.
When you surrender, it’s easier to see the gifts of the present.

𝗜 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗹𝗲𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗶𝗻 𝗼𝗻 𝗮 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁.
This year has brought 𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘣𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 to a whole new level. Since returning to Toronto after some family matters this spring, I’ve been lighting a candle every morning.
This 𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘆 𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹 is to bring light to my inner work. It calls in the Fire element, 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘩𝘦𝘯 (the spirit of the heart in Chinese Medicine) to help me show up the best I can - in myself (where it starts), my work, my relationships, and the world around me.
Being asked (somedays forced!) to recalibrate, reprioritize, dig deep into the dark isn’t easy. But we can bring light to that dark. What the Shen, the Fire element of summer, really wants is 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘯𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 & 𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘴𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯.

I went to a retreat to begin 2020. It was intimate, and heart-centred. We reflected on 2019. We grounded in the present. We got dreamy about 2020. There was vulnerability: shared, witnessed, held, honoured. Visions & goals celebrated. I helped get me in the head/heart space, or the *feeling-space* inside me - that I’d like to come home to as the year goes along.
It’s amazing how a supportive group can lift each other up. I did not grow up with these types of friendships. It was not safe to be myself in my peer group, not safe to take up space. I’m blessed with some real connections in my life now, and yet it still takes conscious effort to unlearn the anxiety of simply being, especially in a group. When I do, and it goes well, it’s 💥💗💗💗💥
Our host Lauren, a dear friend of mine, had a journal waiting in each of our rooms. Each journal featured a different pattern, and she aptly chose mine: the phases of the moon (thanks, LV). I’m pulling it out again on this snowy weekend.
Part of what the moon represents is our emotional life. Instead of a task, what’s a *feeling* you’d like to carry with you through the year? What home-base sensation would you like to live in? It’s pretty much guaranteed that the year will throw you off course at times. But we spend so much time worrying about what we don’t want, that I’m asking myself - and you - to shift that into: what feeling DO I want? What am I coming home to, inside? It could be a word, a nameless sensation in your body, or a practice - like gratitude, perhaps. If you’d like to share, I’ll be your witness. I’ll celebrate this intention and help steer you back there, anytime you need it. .
